Contact Us
Our Artist-in-Residence program provides opportunities for artists, scholars, educators and other creative individuals to research and develop their practice, skill, and passion. Each participant is encouraged to combine their creativity and dedication for stewardship and expression in helping us achieve our mission of restoration, conservation, and preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The program offers participants the time, space, and resources to work individually or collaboratively on projects that produce works that are inspired by the heritage of Democrat Hollow.

Past Participants

Malea Saul: Media & Education

Malea grew up in Eastern Washington, and  graduated from the UW with a degree in Oceanography. After graduation, she looked for opportunities to pursue her interests in education and media . Her experience working with young people in an environmental education included travel and exploration before landing back in Seattle, where she began working on the Democrat Hollow website. She became the first Artist-in-Residence spending a month living at the farm in the Fall of 2018 creating the website and advising the executive committee on media development.

Kerri St Germain: Outdoor Art - Barn Quilt

Kerri has a background in art and theater including set design at the University of Texas at Austin. Kerri brought her passion for large-scale art installation to a collaborative project with the Democrat Hollow Farmhouse Fiber Arts studio with the design, construction, and implementation of a Barn Quilt on the face of the historic 1880's farm barn. The Barn Quilt design is inspired by the combination of the historic name of the hollow and the modern day Christmas Tree farming operation.

Finding movement along with stillness Kristee brought yoga to Democrat Hollow. From a tree pose to a cat-cow movement time at the hollow inspires many to focus on their yoga practice. Kristee, in partnership with YP&TY YOGA, developed yoga "in the wild" as a way to grow the yoga practice of individuals inspired by time in the Hollow.
